Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United
Molineux Stadium is the venue as out-of-sorts Wolverhampton Wanderers and in-form Newcastle United go head-to-head in an exciting Premier League clash.
It’s been a thoroughly underwhelming start to the new Premier League season for Wolverhampton as they come into this round as one of only five sides yet to pick up a victory after three matchdays (D1, L2). After averaging a mere one goal per game in 2021/22, the ‘Wanderers’ have carried their scoring woes into the new top-flight campaign, netting just once in three league matches thus far. Spanning back to last season, Wolves are now winless in ten successive league outings (D3, L7), their longest league streak without winning since the 2012/13 EFL Championship campaign. However, there’s a silver lining for Bruno Lage’s side, considering they are unbeaten in their last four Premier League H2Hs at Molineux (W1, D3), with those three draws each featuring an identical 1-1 scoreline.
On the other hand, Newcastle United were on the verge of pulling off a massive upset last weekend, only to turn a 3-1 lead into a heartbreaking 3-3 home draw against reigning champions Manchester City. Despite dropping the points against Pep Guardiola’s high-flyers, the ‘Magpies’ have started the new Premier League season unbeaten in their opening three games (W1, D2) and could make it four in a row for the first time since 2011/12. There’s plenty of reason for enthusiasm in the visiting camp, as Eddie Howe’s men have found the net in all 14 Premier League meetings with Wolves. But there’s no room for complacency, knowing they were on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline in this corresponding fixture last season.
