Stuttgart vs Augsburg

A place in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals is on the line as Stuttgart and Augsburg go head-to-head at the MHPArena.

As if being dumped out of the Champions League after a 4-1 home defeat to PSG wasn’t humbling enough, Stuttgart slumped to a 2-1 loss to Bundesliga rivals Borussia Moenchengladbach at the weekend. With their hopes of securing back-to-back top-four finishes in doubt, Sebastian Hoeness’ charges turn to their cup duties, vying for their first DFB-Pokal title since 1997. Beating Augsburg would propel them into the semifinals for the second time in three years. It’s a straightforward task on paper, considering they’re on a three-match winning H2H streak. Furthermore, they’ve emerged victorious from seven of their last nine H2Hs on this ground (D1, L1), including the most recent five in a row via an aggregate score of 11-4.

On the other hand, Augsburg will be out to reverse history and reach the DFB-Pokal semi-finals for the first time since 2009/10. The visitors head into proceedings in high spirits despite sharing the spoils with Bundesliga newcomers St. Pauli in a 1-1 draw last weekend. That result knocked them down from a stellar three-game winning run in top-flight action. Interestingly, Augsburg’s form resurgence started immediately after a 1-0 home loss to none other than Stuttgart at the beginning of 2025. Moreover, Jess Thorup’s men had won back-to-back away league matches by an identical 2-0 scoreline before being held by St. Pauli at the weekend, suggesting they won’t go down without a fight.
