Southampton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

A bottom-half Premier League showdown sees Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers lock horns at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton dropped a halftime lead in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at table-topping Liverpool, perhaps waving goodbye to their slim hopes of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship. Nailed to the bottom of the standings amid a dreadful top-flight campaign (W2, D3, L23), Ivan Juric’s men must pull off a miracle to haul back a 14-point deficit on 17th-placed Wolverhampton. There’s no time to waste, but Southampton’s unenviable run of just one win from 13 home league games this season (D1, L11) doesn’t bode well. Furthermore, Ivan Juric’s charges have conceded a league-high 37 home goals this season and remain the only team in this division yet to hit double digits in terms of goals scored on home turf (9).

On the other hand, Wolverhampton drew 1-1 with in-form Everton last weekend after alternating between winning (2) and losing (2) across their four previous Premier League games to steer six points away from the bottom three. Despite unexpectedly beating Bournemouth 1-0 on their last league travel, Wolves can’t take this meeting for granted, considering they had failed to win any of their five previous away league matches (D1, L4). Yet, they can draw heart from an impressive six-match winning H2H league streak against Southampton – their longest in the top flight since beating Burnley seven times on the trot between 1974 and 2018.
