Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid
Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan sets the stage for a high-stakes La Liga showdown between Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
Sevilla handed over bragging rights to bitter Andalusian rivals Real Betis in last weekend’s La Liga derby (1-2) despite finding the opening goal, meaning they’ll be out to avoid a third consecutive league defeat. The hosts haven’t endured such a feat this season, and doing so here would significantly diminish their quest to secure a first top-half finish since 2021/22. However, Sevilla’s home form can’t inspire much confidence, with only four La Liga teams lamenting a worse home record than Garcia Pimienta’s charges (W5, D4, L5). Furthermore, ‘Los Rojiblancos’ haven’t won any of their last five top-flight outings at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan (D3, L2) – their worst such run since an eight-game sequence that stopped in February 2024.
Ominously for Atletico Madrid, they helped Sevilla end that woeful patch just over a year ago, slumping to a narrow 1-0 defeat in last season’s corresponding fixture. However, that was Atletico’s only loss in seven competitive H2Hs between the sides (W5, D1), while they duly avenged it with a heart-stopping 4-3 home win in this season’s reverse fixture in Madrid. Anything other than another victory would probably mark the end of Atletico’s quest to win their third La Liga title under Diego Simeone amid a dismal six-game winless run in all competitions (D1, L5). Out of the Champions League and Copa del Rey, they’ll be out to atone in La Liga and snap their longest winless top-flight run since November 2022.
