Inter Milan vs Sassuolo

Inter Milan’s pursuit of a sixth successive top-four finish in Serie A continues at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza against perennial mid-table tenants Sassuolo.

Confidence must be at an all-time high in the Inter camp following a 2-0 first-leg win over AC Milan in midweek Champions League action that saw them put one foot in the grand final. That triumph also extended the home side’s eye-catching winning run in all competitions to six matches, highlighting the buoyant mood they’ll carry into this fixture. Since a shock 1-0 home loss to top-flight debutants Monza in mid-April, Simone Inzaghi’s men have strung together four straight league victories by an aggregate score of 14-1, including a routine 2-0 triumph at fellow top-four hopefuls Roma last weekend. Curiously, none of Inter’s 17 home league matches this season have ended as a draw (W12, L5), yet it’s worth mentioning that three of those five losses came in their last four outings at Meazza.

On the other hand, last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Bologna saw Sassuolo lose some ground on top-half placings as they enter this round winless in two Serie A games (D1, L1). With nothing but pride left top play for in the remainder of the season, ‘I Neroverdi’ will at least look to end an underwhelming three-match losing league streak on the road. Yet after capitulating at least twice in their last four Serie A outings on the road, they could concede 2+ goals on five conescutive travels for the first time in their top-flight history. Though it may sound a bit bizarre, Meazza has been a happy hunting ground for Sassuolo lately. Alessio Dionisi’s men dispatched Inter 2-0 in the corresponding fixture last season and thumped Milan 5-2 earlier in 2023 at this venue.
