Celta Vigo vs Sevilla

Estadio de Balaidos forms the backdrop for a ‘do or die’ La Liga fixture between European hopefuls Celta Vigo and relegation-battling Sevilla.

Despite recent setbacks, Celta Vigo are on the verge of securing European qualification for the first time in almost a decade. Indeed, they commence this round inside La Liga’s top seven despite slumping to three defeats across their last four matches (W1). However, it’s worth noting that each loss came against higher-ranked opposition, including a keenly contested 3-2 defeat at Real Madrid a week ago. Scoring hasn’t been an issue for Claudio Giraldez’s side, as they’ve netted eight goals in their last four outings. That makes for good reading, especially considering they head into proceedings amid a fine-looking nine-game form on home turf (W6, D1, L2). Therefore, Celta should feel confident about halting an uninspiring four-match winless streak against Sevilla at Balaidos (D2, L2).

Meanwhile, there’s no end to Sevilla’s misery this season as a 2-2 home draw against fellow bottom-half strugglers Leganes left them six points clear of the drop zone ahead of the final four rounds. Yet to secure top-flight survival, Los Rojiblancos will be out to snap a seven-match winless run (D2, L5) and bolster their spirits ahead of sterner tests in the shape of Villarreal and Real Madrid. However, Joaquin Caparros’ men have lost their last three league games on the road, albeit each defeat came via a single-goal margin. That’s the only positive for a team that last scored more than once in away league action in February.
