Bayern Munich vs Benfica

Allianz Arena is the venue as Bayern Munich and Benfica go head-to-head in a potentially high-scoring UEFA Champions League fixture. Three of their last four H2Hs in the competition have featured 4+ overall goals.

Perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been nothing short of outstanding in the Champions League so far, winning all three opening Group E matches by an aggregate score of 12-0. Already on the verge of reaching the competition’s knock-out stages, the ‘Bavarians’ will be looking to build on their intimidating 22-game unbeaten Champions League streak at home (W21, D1). Since they’ve gone unbeaten in all 11 European match-ups against Benfica (W8, D3), Bayern look to be in a prime position to extend their imperious home form this season. Julian Nagelsmann’s men have won five of their six competitive fixtures at the Allianz Arena this term (L1), netting a resounding average of 4.17 goals per game in the process! Interestingly, this will be Bayern’s 500th match in European football, a milestone only achieved by Barcelona and Real Madrid so far.

On the other hand, a stunning 3-0 home win over Barcelona on Matchday 2 highlights Benfica’s mixed bag of results in Group E (W1, D1, L1). However, the Portuguese giants have failed to find the net in the remaining Champions League outings this term, including a 4-0 thrashing to Bayern Munich in the reverse fixture. Since beating AEK Athens 3-2 in October 2018, Benfica have gone winless in their subsequent six Champions League away games (D2, L4). Furthermore, the ‘Eagles’ have only won one of their last 13 Champions League encounters against German opponents (D3, L9), underlining their struggle against Bundesliga clubs. Going into proceedings on the back of a 1-1 away draw to domestic rivals Estoril, Jorge Jesus’ men look doomed here, especially after keeping just one clean sheet in their last ten competitive games.
