Augsburg vs Bayern Munich

An all-Bundesliga DFB-Pokal second-round tie pits Augsburg and Bayern Munich against each other at the WWK Arena for the second time in just over a month.

Augsburg boast fond memory of their most recent home encounter against Bayern as they took the perennial German champions down 1-0 in mid-September. However, they have since blown hot and cold across three subsequent Bundesliga matches (W1, D1, L1), all of which saw both teams on the scoresheet. Augsburg’s 4-0 thumping of lower-league Lohne in the opening DFB-Pokal round helped them set up this potentially history-defining fixture as they could beat Bayern in back-to-back competitive clashes for the first time. However, it has to come at long odds, especially considering ‘Die Fuggerstädter’ have managed just one triumph in five competitive home outings this season (D1, L3), with Enrico Maaßen’s men never scoring more than once across those games.

Meanwhile, visiting Bayern Munich will be out to get their revenge on the back of an overwhelming 5-0 home victory over fellow Bundesliga top-four hopefuls Freiburg at the weekend. It came only days after Julian Nagelsmann’s side claimed a 4-2 Champions League win at Viktoria Plzen to seal their place in the competition’s knock-out stages. Given Bayern’s current goalscoring form, it’s hard to exclude the possibility of the ‘Bavarians’ emulating a 5-0 triumph that saw them overcome Viktoria Koln in the previous DFB-Pokal round. But before jumping the gun, consider Nagelsmann’s men have won none of their last three away matches in domestic competitions (D2, L1). Furthermore, they’ve lost both previous league visits to Augsburg via a single-goal margin.
